Dr. Naida-Michal Brandl is the Assistant professor at the University of Zagreb, Chair of Judaic studies. She has BA in History and Archaeology (double major) from the University of Zagreb, Croatia, with the BA thesis «Sephardic Diaspora in Mediterranean in the 16th century», under mentorship of prof. Drago Roksandić. Her doctoral thesis is from the University of Zagreb, Croatia (2015) «Jews in Croatia from 1944/5 until 1952», under mentorship of prof. Ivo Banac. Her research interests include: Jewish history in Croatia in the interwar period, especially the evolution of Zionism; Jewish history in Croatia in the postwar period; Jewish history between two Adriatic coasts through maritime documents in Italian archives as well as tangible and intangible Jewish heritage in Croatia. She is an outside research consultant to the World Jewish Restitution Organization (WJRO) in the project of the restitution of the Jewish property in Croatia. She is one of the principal authors of the both BA and MA programs at the Chair of Judaic studies. She teaches different courses in Jewish history i.e. The survey of the Jewish history until the 18th century, The survey of the Jewish history from the Haskalah and Emancipation, Jewish history in Croat lands until the 20th century, Jewish history in Croatia in the 20th century, Selected topics from Jewish Modern and Contemporary history: History of Israel and History of Judaic studies. In co-operation with Yad Vashem, she established and co-leads the online course, Teaching about the Shoah. In December 2017, she won The Fred and Ellen Lewis / JDC Archives Fellowship, New York, NY, USA on the topic of the role of the JDC in reestablishing Jewish communities in Croatia after the Second World War. She speaks and reads Croatian, English. Hebrew and reads Italian and German.
